What About Sciatica During Pregnancy?

Sciatic discomfort is another common concern I hear from expecting mothers.

When a client comes in describing sciatic-type pain, I don't simply assume that she needs deep pressure directly over the painful area.

Instead, I look at the bigger picture.

How is she standing?

Where is she carrying tension?

What muscles are working harder?

What positions are comfortable?

Are there other areas that may be contributing to the discomfort?

Sometimes the most effective approach isn't to work aggressively on the area that hurts. It may be more appropriate to address surrounding muscles and tissues while keeping the client comfortable and respecting the changes taking place during pregnancy.

That's where individualized massage makes a difference.

When you're pregnant, you want your massage therapist to understand more than just how to give a good massage.

They need to understand pregnancy-related considerations, appropriate positioning, contraindications and when a particular technique or approach isn't appropriate.

That's one reason I encourage expecting mothers to look for a therapist who has specific experience working with prenatal clients.

At Coultas Massage, prenatal massage is one of the areas we specialize in. After 15 years in the profession, I've had the opportunity to work with many different bodies, pregnancies and sources of discomfort.

That experience has taught me not to assume that every client needs the same thing.
